How to maintain and clean your drains

18 June 2024by John McDermott

Maintaining clean drains is essential for preventing blockages and ensuring the smooth operation of your drainage system. Start by routinely flushing your drains with hot water. This simple practice helps dissolve grease, soap scum, and other residues that can build up over time. Pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain once a week can effectively keep it clear. Additionally, using a homemade mixture of baking soda and vinegar can break down minor clogs and deodorize your drains. Simply pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar into the drain, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then flush with hot water.

To prevent debris from entering your drains in the first place, use drain guards or strainers in your sinks, showers, and bathtubs. These inexpensive devices catch hair, food particles, and other debris, allowing only water to flow through. Clean these strainers regularly to ensure they remain effective. In the kitchen, avoid pouring grease or oil down the sink as they solidify and cause blockages. Instead, collect grease in a container and dispose of it in the bin. Being mindful of what goes down your drains is a key step in maintaining their cleanliness and preventing costly repairs.

For deeper maintenance, consider scheduling regular professional inspections and cleanings. Professional drainage engineers can use specialized tools such as drain cameras to inspect the interior of your pipes, identifying potential issues before they become serious problems. They can also perform high pressure water jetting, which uses high-pressure water to thoroughly clean the pipes and remove stubborn buildup. Regular professional maintenance, combined with routine at-home care, ensures your drains remain clear and efficient, extending the lifespan of your plumbing system and saving you from unexpected and costly plumbing emergencies.
